Order picking with conveyor technology

The term goods-to-person refers to a dynamic picking process that can be semi-automated or fully automated. The goods are brought from the warehouse to the picker using conveyor technology . This type of picking is also known as goods-to-person.

Sequence

With this picking method, the goods to be picked are prepared dynamically and automatically. The items are brought to the picker using conveyor technology. The picker receives the goods at his picking station and fetches the quantity specified by the respective warehouse management system. The containers in which the goods came are then returned to the warehouse, either empty or with remaining quantities. The transport is carried out by the same conveyor technology that brought the goods.

advantages and disadvantages

  • Time savings through elimination of travel and search times
  • Shorter transport time thanks to fast and fully automatic conveyors
  • minimal error rate
  • High picking performance
  • High flexibility
  • Physical relief of the picker
  • Large selection of items in stock possible
  • Ergonomic workplace possible

A disadvantage of this type of picking is the higher investment costs for automated shelving and retrieval systems. The fixed number of picking stations also does not allow for spontaneous changes. If the machines stop, a serious chain reaction follows that can lead to a warehouse shutdown.

systems

Here are a few examples of goods-to-man systems:

  • high-bay warehouse with automatic rack conveyors
  • flow racks with automatic rack conveyors
  • carousel and tower racks
  • automatic order picking warehouse system

man to commodity

The man-to-goods picking method is the counterpart to the goods-to-man picking method. This is because the assigned picker has to move to each individual storage position himself when walking around the warehouse - static picking. Various picking methods are available for this type of picking.
