Pick-by-Scan

Pick-by-Scan

Pick-by-Scan: Order picking with a scanning device

Pick-by-Scan or Pick-by-MDE refers to paperless order picking using mobile data capture devices (MDE): handheld computers with integrated 1D or 2D barcode scanners. This method is used primarily in distribution centers.

Function and Application

Picking lists are loaded onto the respective MDE devices or tablet PCs. Various mobile devices for industrial use are available - with Android or Windows as the operating system. The order data can be provided in two ways:

  1. Local storage: Tour and order data must be transferred to the MDE in advance; no inventory corrections or replenishment requests can be made
  2. Via a network connection through a warehouse management or ERP system: Information is sent to the MDE in real time. The picker can therefore react flexibly to changes, such as incorrect stock levels

The display on the mobile data collection device shows the picker the storage location and the number of items to be picked. Once at the storage location, the picker scans the storage location number and the corresponding item number. The barcodes are recorded using an integrated barcode reader. If the item is picked incorrectly, an error message appears on the display - this can reduce the error rate. After each scan, the picker is also shown the target/actual differences. Once the picking list has been processed, it is transmitted to the goods system or the ERP system. Packing lists and shipping documents are then printed.

By the way: The MDWs are held in the hand or attached to a transport system, for example on a picking trolley or a forklift. They have a powerful battery that lasts between 6 and 8 hours

Advantages of the Pick-by-Scan process

  • real-time communication via WLAN
  • No subsequent inventory reconciliation necessary
  • Printer cartridges and paper are saved
  • Clear guidance on the tour
  • Can be used in various storage areas
  • Low error rate thanks to direct feedback
  • More efficient work through elimination of paperwork
  • Lower secondary effort due to the barcode-guided system
  • Barcodes are inexpensive to purchase
  • Transparency through real-time data in digital form

Disadvantages of the pick-by-scan process

  • No free hands during picking
  • High investment costs for equipment, plus system costs and training costs
  • Misreadings are possible due to dirty or unreadable barcodes
  • Possibly a higher time expenditure due to multiple scanning
