Industrial trucks – also known as floor conveyors – are means of transport for the horizontal transport of goods. Regulation 68 of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) defines industrial trucks in the sense of the accident prevention regulations as conveying equipment that runs on wheels and is freely steerable, is suitable for transporting, pulling or pushing loads and is intended for use within the company.

Overview of industrial trucks

In industry, logistics and trade, powerful forklifts are the most important transport vehicle. In construction and agriculture, telescopic forklifts with extended telescopic arms are often used. The freely moving vehicles are referred to as trackless industrial trucks and include:

  • forklifts
  • tractor
  • low-lift truck
  • Manual high lift trucks
  • Electric pallet trucks
  • pallet truck with scale
  • scissor lift truck

Note : In contrast, devices for vertical transport are called overhead conveyors.

Classification of industrial trucks into seven groups according to VDI

The Association of German Engineers (VDI) divides industrial trucks into seven groups ( VDI Guideline 3586 ):

  1. Hand-operated devices, such as manual low-lift trucks
  2. gasoline and LPG equipment, such as forklifts
  3. diesel vehicles for outdoor use
  4. electric walking devices
  5. electric stand-alone devices
  6. electric driver seat devices
  7. order picking devices

Each group is assigned an abbreviation, for example EFM for “ Electric driver’s seat reach truck ”.

According to the German industrial standard DIN 15140 , a further distinction is made for forklift trucks with a driver's seat:

  • Front forklift trucks pick up the load from the front and transport it in a cantilever manner.
  • Reach trucks pick up loads from the front, some of which are transported within the wheel base.
  • Four-way forklifts pick up loads from the front and transport them between the wheels. When stationary, the direction of travel can be changed by 90°.
  • Cross-forklift trucks pick up loads from the side.

In the area of ​​warehousing and logistics, a distinction is made between the following industrial trucks:

  • track-guided industrial trucks, e.g. systems without a driver
  • trackless industrial trucks, e.g. pallet trucks and forklifts
  • rail-bound industrial trucks, e.g. freight wagons
  • lifting equipment such as cranes

Note: According to DGUV Regulation 68, equipment such as straddle carriers, long-distance trucks, driverless transport vehicles, bed movers, reach stackers, narrow-aisle forklifts and tractors are also classified as industrial trucks.

High lift trucks for operating high racks

Manual high lift trucks can be used to lift pallets and other goods into high racks. Electric high lift trucks are the ideal choice for demanding lifting and lowering work. The load capacity is usually around 1,500 kg .

Lift table trolleys and electric lifting tables lift goods and work equipment to the desired height. Lift tables can carry up to 1,000 kg and are also suitable for filling the lower areas of pallet racks .

Multi-way forklifts and four-way forklifts with individually steerable wheels are the best choice for transporting long goods. These are available as side-seat and side-loading forklifts.

front loaders, three- and four-wheel forklifts

Also known as counterbalance forklifts, these industrial trucks are the standard for goods handling and transport. Three-wheel forklifts with load capacities of up to 2,000 kg offer better maneuverability and are the preferred choice in tight warehouses. Four-wheel forklifts can carry up to 8,000 kg .
