CE marking on pallet trucks and forklifts

CE marking

CE marking

The CE marking is an essential element in product conformity within the European Union. This marking, which stands for "Conformité Européenne" (European Conformity), indicates that a product complies with EU safety regulations. Despite the common misconception, the CE mark is not a seal of quality, but a confirmation that the product meets the minimum safety standards.

What is the CE marking?

The CE marking certifies that a product complies with EU directives on safety, health and environmental protection. It is affixed by the manufacturer or an EU representative and is a key indicator that the product can be marketed in the EU economic area. External testing by independent bodies is only required in exceptional cases.

Which products are affected?

The CE marking requirement does not apply to all products, but mainly to those that pose potential safety and health risks. These include:

  • Technical devices such as office lights
  • medical devices
  • Machines, such as pallet trucks , forklifts
  • toy
  • Electrically operated furnishings

What should be taken into account when affixing the CE marking?

Pallet trucks and forklifts is an indicator of compliance with European safety standards and contributes to safety in the workplace. Here are some important aspects to consider when CE marking these vehicles:

  1. Identify relevant regulations and directives: The CE marking shows that pallet trucks and forklifts comply with the relevant EU safety regulations. This includes requirements for design, manufacture, safety devices and performance.
  2. Manufacturer responsibility : The manufacturer of the equipment is responsible for ensuring that each vehicle receives the CE marking before sale in the EU. This involves careful checking and testing to ensure that the vehicle complies with EU standards.
  3. Conformity assessment procedure: Before affixing the CE marking, the manufacturer must carry out a conformity assessment procedure. This involves internal testing of the devices to confirm that they meet EU requirements.
  4. Create technical documentation: Comprehensive technical documentation must be created for each device, confirming compliance with all relevant regulations
  5. Affix the CE marking: The marking must be clearly visible and permanent, if necessary also on the packaging or in the accompanying documents.
  6. Drafting an EU declaration of conformity: After successfully completing the conformity assessment procedure, the manufacturer draws up an EU declaration of conformity. This declaration is a legally binding document that confirms the conformity of the vehicle with EU regulations.
  7. Maintenance and inspection : Even after their launch, forklifts and pallet trucks must be regularly maintained and inspected to ensure continued compliance with safety standards.

UKCA Declaration of Conformity: Adjustments for UK

Following the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, the certification standard for products has changed. The previous CE marking, which indicates compliance with EU safety standards, is no longer recognised in the United Kingdom. Instead, the UKCA ("UK conformity assessed") marking has been introduced. This new marking now serves as proof that products comply with British safety standards.
