Order-oriented, serial picking is a single-stage picking method in which order items are processed one after the other according to orders.

In order-oriented, serial picking, order items are processed one after the other. Either one picker covers all storage zones or an order is passed from a picker in a specific zone to the next picker and his zone. This continues until the order has been completed.

Order-oriented, serial picking is a form of single-stage picking.

differentiation

  • Order-oriented, serial picking: The individual orders are processed one after the other in different storage zones. Either a picker goes through all storage zones or an order is passed from a picker in one zone to a picker in that zone
  • Order-oriented, parallel picking : Each order is divided into sub-orders - according to the storage zones. Picking takes place in parallel in the individual storage zones. After each execution, the sub-orders are merged.
  • Series-oriented, parallel picking: The incoming orders are grouped into series. Within a series, the orders are then split up into the positions of the individual storage zones. The individual items are then assigned to their original individual orders.

Advantages and disadvantages of order-oriented, serial picking

Advantage: The pickers move in small picking zones. Distances and order processing times are shortened. In addition, errors can be discovered quickly. Training is easy.

Disadvantage: Orders must be temporarily stored at the transfer points to the next storage zone. In addition, an imbalance can arise with regard to the work intensity in the individual storage zones.

Single-stage picking versus two-stage picking

  • Single-stage picking: Items of a customer order are assembled in a single pass
  • Two-stage picking: Customer orders are summarized - the first stage involves picking the same items added from the various individual orders; in the second stage, the individual items are then assigned to the respective individual order
