Order-oriented, parallel picking is a single-stage picking method in which an order is divided into different picking zones and thus processed simultaneously.

In order-oriented, parallel picking, larger orders are split up and processed in different storage areas. They are not passed on one after the other from one storage area to another, but are processed in parallel in different storage areas. As soon as all partial orders are complete, they are reassembled into the overall orders at a collection point.

Order-oriented, parallel picking is a form of single-stage picking.

differentiation

  • Order-oriented, parallel picking: Each order is divided into sub-orders - tailored to the storage zones. Picking takes place in parallel in the individual storage zones. After completion, the sub-orders are merged
  • Order-oriented, serial picking : The individual orders are processed one after the other in different storage zones. Either a picker goes through all storage zones or an order is passed from a picker in one zone to a picker in that zone
  • Series-oriented, parallel picking: The incoming orders are grouped into series. Within a series, the orders are then split up into the positions of the individual storage zones. The individual items are then assigned to their original individual orders.

Advantages and disadvantages of order-oriented, parallel picking

Advantage: Distances are shortened, which also minimizes order processing time

Disadvantage: A separate work area is required to combine the partial orders. In addition, the entire process must be monitored by a warehouse management system.

Single-stage picking versus two-stage picking

  • Single-stage picking: Items of a customer order are assembled in a single pass
  • Two-stage picking: Customer orders are summarized - the first stage involves picking the same items added from the various individual orders; in the second stage, the individual items are then assigned to the respective individual order
