assembly of a pallet rack

Pallet racks are suitable for storing palletized goods, lattice boxes and various types of pallets. They consist of several components, the interaction of which enables the storage of heavy loads. These components must be arranged correctly during assembly. There are a few points to consider with pallet racks in this regard, including information that can be useful in advance.

Before you start building: Requirements and things worth knowing

  • The shelving system must be installed on a solid surface
  • The different length trusses have different load capacities
  • The maximum load can only be used with evenly distributed load
  • Two screw connections should be used per shelf stand when mounting in the floor
  • The use of foot plates is essential as the load capacity is influenced
  • layout of the camp
    • Wide aisle warehouse : This arrangement allows access from all sides, is technically simple and inexpensive to implement and can be flexibly expanded - the most commonly used arrangement in warehouses.
    • Narrow aisle warehouse : This arrangement allows more space to be used in the same area because the storage density is very high. However, this type of warehouse is complex to set up and more expensive. Access is limited to the sides. This arrangement is particularly suitable for small warehouses.

The structure and important terms

Important glossary of terms :

  • Distance : The correct distance between shelves is specified in Germany by the professional association. The standard minimum distance is 200 mm. Spacers are used to keep two rows of shelves at a certain distance from each other
  • Assembly instructions : Here you will find all the important steps for assembling the pallet rack you have purchased
  • Fire protection: All fire protection requirements in the warehouse must be observed
  • Push- through protection: A protective measure that prevents a pallet from being pushed through the rack when it is being stored
  • Foundation : For outdoor use, a pallet rack foundation is essential
  • Labeling : Fixed shelves with a shelf load of more than 200 kg must be labelled with information on the manufacturer, type designation, year of manufacture and permissible shelf and bay load
  • Folding length: The pallet rack folding length or shelf height indicates the distance from the hall floor to the top edge of the next shelf
  • Inspection : The shelf inspection is an annual inspection that must be carried out in accordance with DIN EN 15635. A written report on the condition of the shelves is prepared, which must be kept. The inspection is carried out by a qualified person
  • Technical drawing: Technical drawings or pallet rack CAD drawings help to better plan the equipment of the warehouse with shelves. The drawings clearly show all dimensions, so the space requirements can be planned precisely
  • Training : Employees must be trained in the correct use of pallet racks at least once a year
  • Overhang : Indication of the dimensions of how far a pallet may protrude in the rack
  • Anchoring : All shelves that are operated with a forklift require anchoring

Structure : A pallet rack consists of four rack uprights and any number of crossbeams - the "base field", so to speak. The rack uprights must be mounted with floor anchors. Pallets can now be stored in two ways. Either on crossbeams - individual storage - or on longitudinal beams - two to three pallets next to each other in one rack field. Crossbeams are used in automated warehouses because the storage space is clearly defined. Longitudinal beams, on the other hand, are used for supply racks or transfer racks.

By the way : Attaching pallet racks - Anchoring to the floor is not required by law, except for a height/depth ratio of more than 5:1. DGUV Rule 108-007 applies here. The rack must be secured against tipping! Anchoring to the wall can be done using spacers.

After assembly - shelf protection and accessories

To protect the pallet rack from harmful influences such as impacts, scratches, dents or other accident consequences, a crash barrier can be used. Various accessories can be used to adapt the pallet rack to individual requirements. Here is a brief overview:

  • Shelf: Pallet rack shelves are standard accessories and can be easily inserted into the pallet rack without the use of tools. The thicker the shelf, the greater the stability
  • Wood/chipboard: This type of board is recommended for large warehouses in which many shelves are to be equipped, as they are very economical to purchase
  • Grid floor: Robust, durable and can be attached without tools
  • Grid back wall: A reliable push-through protection
  • Traverse/Holm: Additional shelves can be created in a traverse shelf. If additional space is required later, this tool can be used to remedy the situation
  • Load distributor: A pallet rack load distributor enables installation on asphalt floors
  • Shelf labeling: Labels or signs can/should be attached to simplify or improve processes. The use of shelf labels is particularly worthwhile for order picking work
